IDEA Certification: What does it mean?

A few years ago, when we realized that Leo’s Overhead Doors was going to hit our 50th year in service in 2016, we decided it was time to go to the next level. We needed to ensure that not only were we doing our best for our clients, but we wanted to recognize our milestone by becoming a household name synonymous with quality in overhead doors. To do that, we felt that a formal distinction obtained from a knowledgeable, nonpartisan entity would be a worthwhile goal for our company to strive for, for our clients to know that we are in fact, always doing our best to provide unparalleled quality in every aspect of our business.

So we looked around at what we could do, and found the International Door Association, or IDA, the trade association in the United States for overhead door companies. To be a member, companies must adhere to their code of conduct, among other things. The code of conduct is designed to allow for only the highest caliber of companies in their way of conducting business to be members of the IDA. The IDA’s Code of Business Conduct outlines maintaining customer satisfaction, truth in selling & advertising, responsible business practices, safety, compliance, warranties, and more. In addition, the IDA encourages an accreditation program through the IDEA (Institute of Door Dealer Education and Accreditation) to certify overhead door companies in several facets of business. Only overhead door companies that can pass certain tests can be accredited. The test subjects to pass are as follows: Accounting and General Business Principles, Safety and OSHA Compliance, Insurance and Legal, Residential and Commercial Door Technical Essentials, Commercial Steel Rolling Doors, and Sales and Marketing.

We undertook to earn and maintain this accreditation for our customers, and I am proud to report that we have been an accredited dealer for over a year now. There are many choices out there for consumers. We know that we are competing for your business each and every day, and we want you to know that we stand out. In our years of service, our dedication to quality, and our commitment to our vendors, to our own staff, and to you our customers. We are proud to be the only overhead door company that is IDEA accredited in the Capital Region.

Fall time at Leo’s Overhead Doors with the Meichtry family

Fall time is a wonderful time to be in upstate NY. First and foremost, there’s the leaves changing & the weather turning crispier and fresher. In response to the changes in the air, we turn our attention to preparing for winter. It’s time to get that house in order! Also, on a personal note, fall time brings to mind the birth of our little Leo, who turned 2 this weekend! The party was held at Engelke Farm, a good client of Leo’s Overhead Doors, here in Troy. We also had a delivery of pizza, chicken nuggets, and lemonade from Carol’s Pizza. It was lovely to celebrate with Trish and Brian as well as other friends and family!  The weather was perfect and we had a wonderful time. The cider donuts were out of this world, and pumpkin patch hayrides were awesome. I definitely recommend the farm as a good birthday party location!

After the fun and games of fall time are over though, we have to ensure our families will be safe in our homes this coming winter. If your overhead door needs a tuneup or if you need a new one, Leo’s Overhead Doors will be more than happy to help! Just give us a call!

Leo’s Greener Overhead Doors

In NYS, it’s a very popular idea to go green, both in business practice and personally. With green on the mind, Leo’s Overhead Doors has already made strides towards more energy efficiency and environmental consciousness. We have looked into going solar, putting more greenery into our city property, and using products that are more environmentally friendly.

The garage door business is not one that the average person thinks of as a particularly green business when it comes to the use of parts, equipment, and supplies. Leo’s Overhead Doors wants to be the exception – taking into account the health and safety of both our workers and our clients. We have looked into the inventory and practices of our suppliers to determine suitable alternatives to traditional items we regularly use such as doors, lubricant, and parts. When possible, Leo’s orders doors and parts made in the USA, with companies that adhere to US standards and environmental practices. Our lubricant is specially ordered because it is free of methylene chloride (a known carcinogen and irritant that can cause all kinds of health problems, and is, unfortunately, found commonly in both industrial and residential settings). The green version we use will outlast regular oils, grease, and silicone, reducing long term waste, time, and money. We know that our job has everything to do with your safety, so we will spend a little more to ensure that what we use products that are held to a higher standard for the benefit of those we come in contact with. Personally, we don’t want toxic harsh chemicals and irritants around ourselves and our children, so why would we want it around our technicians and clients?

In addition, the solar power alternative system that we have looked into would have allowed us to both benefit from another source of power and give back to the grid any surplus power generated by the system during off-peak times. However, the cost was extremely significant to acquire the system, for a business in NYS, so we have to manage our resources so that we can fully implement the solar alternative within 3-5 years. This has become one of our long-term goals at Leo’s Overhead Doors.

In the meantime, another measure we have been taking towards being more green is growing more green – plants, that is. I ordered several kinds of plants, including trees, bushes, garden plants, and seeds that grow in our native zone 5, to plant in our previously unused back yard. So far, I’ve been able to use a very accessible and plentiful waste product (my pet goats’ droppings and bedding as composted fertilizer) to begin to grow a backyard nursery of plants that I hope will become beneficial to our employees here as a green, stress-reducing garden to take a break in. I’m hoping this measure will be a trend-setter among businesses who own or rent city lots, who have unused space outside that could be converted to greenery to benefit both the environment and city workers.

The first step is to let everyone know what we are doing to go greener in our everyday practices. I hope this blog entry has done just that. We here at Leo’s Overhead Doors are always looking at better ways to do more for our clients and employees, and get away from unnecessary chemicals and unnatural products, which is why we like the idea of going green. Although it may be slightly more research, work, and expense, it is well worth the results. We are able to ensure to our clients that we will not introduce harmful chemicals, we are more safety and health conscious, and overall, we aim for a higher business standard.

A Warm Welcome to…

…Our 2 new Leo’s Overhead Door family members – Trish and Gabby!

Trish came to us at Leo’s Overhead Doors on May 16th, which was at just the right time (more about that timing later)! She is assuming the role of Office Manager, which in our family-run business, means that she has to deal with tons of pandemonium in the form of in-laws, grandparents, aunts, a great-grandmother, various four-legged creatures that shower us all with different shades of shedding fur, dirt, and slobber, and screaming-but-lovable children while she trains in running our regular office functions such as invoicing, bill payment, providing stellar customer service, and all our forms of record-keeping. So far I am pleased to report that Trish has handled it all in stride, with a wonderful attitude, and has fit right into it all with flying colors. As a result, I am very confident in her ability to handle ANYTHING this office can throw at her.

As for our other new arrival, her name is Gabrielle. She came to us on May 20th, two weeks ahead of schedule, weighing just under 7 lbs, after about 8 hours of hard labor. Having been absent from the office due to labor and pregnancy, you can understand why the timing for both of these new arrivals was so crucial. I am so very blessed and thankful to have had things turn out the way they did and for both Trish’s and Gabrielle’s timely arrivals.

So please join me in welcoming Trish and Gabby to the office at Leo’s Overhead Doors! And always remember that we are all here at Leo’s to continue our efforts at being the best quality overhead door company that we can be to meet all of our clients’ needs.

Update on Happenings at Leo’s Overhead Doors – May 2017

Hello, everyone! It has been a while since I’ve updated these notes, so I figure I owe this blog a bit of an update. Little Leo is now over a year and a half, so it has been fun running after him and doing my best for Leo’s Overhead Doors as well. We are also expecting our second child any day now. Stay tuned!

We remain here at 540 Pawling Ave, Troy, NY, working and fulfilling our best to our deserving clients.

Some updates: Brian, our technician, can do framing and siding, and he has continued to do some amazing things for our customers. We had a client hit her overhead door with her car, and hit the non-load-bearing side of her home as well, and we were able to rebuild her wall, reset her siding, match the framing, and rehang a brand-spanking new upgraded door to look and work even better than the one she hit, thanks to the tireless efforts of my husband Eric and our tech Brian.

Some other developments: we are hiring for a full time office person to replace me here…. so if you know anyone looking, please give me a call. The listing is with NYS Labor Dept and ZipRecruiter.

I may not be able to update too much more in the near future, as with all the goings-on it has been hard to keep up. However, for you, I will. After all, you are why we are able to stay in business here in Troy. Thank you for all your business these past years. Our family does appreciate it and we’ll be here for all your overhead door needs!

Happy New Year 2017!

It has been a while since I wrote on this blog, so I hope you will forgive my absence. We here at Leo’s Overhead Doors have been a little busy getting ready for the new year in the office. I do want to take some time to thank everyone for their business in this past year, our 50th. It was a very special year for us, and I hope it was for you.

We have expanded our offerings to the Capital Region by 2 new vendors: Fabbri Creations and Sommer USA, manufacturers who have the same pride in their work and dedication to their customers as we ourselves do. We are proud to offer their products in addition to what we have always offered – quality. We have continued to commit ourselves 24/7 to our clients whenever their overhead door needs have arisen in 2016.

Our family is growing and expanding, we have added another technician to our staff. Thanks to you our customers, we have been able to continue the tradition of Leo’s Overhead Doors in 2016 and now in 2017.

So I want to show my appreciation and wish you all a wonderful, healthy and happy 2017. May all your overhead door wishes be granted by Leo’s Overhead Doors in the coming new year!
